Major depressive disorder (depression) is a mood disorder characterized by periods lasting two weeks or longer in which an individual feels depressed, sad, hopeless, discouraged, or "down in the dumps." Symptoms of depression include:
  • Changes in appetite, weight, or sleep patterns
  • Decreased energy
  • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
  • Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
  • Loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities or hobbies
