Major depressive disorder (depression) is a mood disorder characterized by
periods lasting two weeks or longer in which an individual feels
depressed, sad, hopeless, discouraged, or "down in the dumps." Symptoms
of depression include:
- Changes in appetite, weight, or sleep patterns
- Decreased energy
- Feelings of worthlessness or guilt
- Difficulty thinking, concentrating, or making decisions
- Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
- Loss of interest in previously pleasurable activities or hobbies
