Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by recurrent obsessions or compulsions that are severe enough to be time consuming or cause marked distress or significant impairment. Symptoms of OCD include:
  • Repetitive thoughts about germs or contamination
  • Repetitive doubts (e.g., wondering whether one has performed some act such as leaving a door unlocked)
  • The need to have things in a particular order (e.g., intense distress when objects are disordered or asymmetrical)
  • The need to carry out repetitive behaviors such as hand washing or reordering
  • The need to carry out repetitive mental acts such as praying, counting, or repeating words silently
