Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is an anxiety disorder characterized by the development of reactionary symptoms such as intense fear or helplessness following exposure to an extremely traumatic experience or event. Symptoms of PTSD include:
- Recurrent recollections or flashbacks of the traumatic event
- Avoidance of thoughts or situations associated with the traumatic event
- Feelings of detachment or estrangement from others
- Difficulty falling or staying asleep
- Recurrent distressing dreams of the event
- Irritability or outbursts of anger
- Difficulty concentrating
