What are some techniques to overcome paruresis (e.g., pee shyness)?

Asked by User 164 – June 25, 2008

I used to be very pee shy and I still am to a fair degree, particularly when urinals are very close together and there are no barriers.... Perhaps it originated when that jerk in elementary school jumped over the bathroom stall to harass me, but I know it can be really annoying. What's the best way to overcome it?

It is my experience that almost everyone is pee shy at different times in their lives. I recall being a bit that way and getting over it by simply having to go to the bathroom really, really badly and then the shyness took a back seat to urgency. The next time I went in a crowded set of urinals there was less stress. It may not work at all, but I would consider holding it in until you are going to explode and then going to the bathroom. After a few trials like this I would wager that the fear will be significantly lessened.
