What is the main difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II?

Asked by Josh – June 30, 2008

After reading information on these two disorders, I am a little confused about the key differences between them. Can someone explain to me in plain English the main difference between Bipolar I and Bipolar II?

Bipolar I involves manic episodes, whereas bipolar II involves only hypomania. Bipolar I is the typical "manic depressive" syndrome, but you can think of bipolar II as a condition where somebody oscillates between a more or less "normal" mood and major depressive episodes.
